I'm Debbie Wegner and I have been training with Matt for 7 1/2 years now. I am 53 years old and my husband and I have four adult children. Matt has helped me tremendously since the very beginning. In 2011, I had reached a weight that scared me and I needed to do something about it. My neighbor introduced me to Matt and I lost nearly 50 lbs with his nutrition and workout plans (hand-written back then), but over time as I began eating sweets again, I gained back almost 40 lbs.
Well, with my clothes fitting tighter, not liking how I look in pictures and more importantly having knee issues where my weight was making the pain worse, I decided that it was time to make a change again with this Hustle for the Muscle challenge. My goal was to lose 15 lbs of body fat. After six weeks of the challenge, I surpassed my goal and have lost almost 20 lbs of fat, gained 7 lbs of lean body mass, and lost 11 lbs according to the scale! I am very pleased and wouldn't have been able to do it without Matt's nutritional and cardio advice, as well as his encouragement.
For me, the main focus was on nutrition, and that has always been a struggle for me. But I made it a priority in my life again and will continue to make it a priority knowing that I do not like the feeling of being overweight and the pain it causes my joints. During my initial check-in with Matt in April, he helped me come up with how many grams of protein, carbs, and fat I should eat a day, along with ideas of what to eat and an "allowable" list of carbs. That really helped! Using MyFitnessPal, I planned out my meals and tried to do meal prepping twice a week (not perfect yet, but am working on it). I was trying to avoid carbs altogether before this challenge, but now incorporating some carbs made a huge difference! MyFitnessPal is a great tool to help me be accountable with what I eat and plan out ahead of time (ideally). Otherwise, I would have no idea how many grams of protein, fat, and carbs I was eating, because guessing does not work well for me!
Another thing that definitely helped me was incorporating 30 minutes of cardio a day, on top of my strength training. My goal was 7 days a week (but was only able to get in 3-4 on average). I did notice on the weeks that I didn't do as much cardio, I did not lose as much fat. So for me, it was a combination of planning out my nutrition and cardio that helped me attain my goal.
Working out in small groups definitely helped, too. I've asked my doctors if working out and lifting weights is making my osteoarthritis in my knees worse, but they say no! I am strengthening the muscles around my joints, which actually helps! Hearing that from them was very encouraging to me. When I work out at Fuse, I know that I am being watched so that I do the exercises with proper form. That is important to me.
I would not have been able to lose my weight and gain muscle if it wasn't for Matt and his nutritional advice and workout plans. I know I would not be able to do this on my own. I love all the people I work out with in the small groups here at Fuse and the encouragement they give me! I will continue to be successful in my weight loss and maintenance to follow, as this challenge has inspired me to do so.
